Part 1 – Holding the shot & simply looking

“Everyday life is interesting and any human being is interesting, if you look carefully enough you might see something.”

Filmed:  October 2012

Mark Cousins an Irish director and occasional presenter/critic on film. He is a native of Ulster. He interviewed famous filmmakers such as David Lynch, Martin Scorsese and Roman Polanski in the TV series Scene by Scene. His 2011 film The Story of Film: An Odyssey was broadcast as 15 one-hour television episodes on More4 and later featured at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival.

One of Mark’s recent feature documentaries What Is This Film Called Love? (2012) Together with Sergei Eisenstein, his imaginary companion on a walking tour of Mexico City, Mark contemplates historical change, shot composition, and his own identity. After the mammoth effort of The Story of Film: An Odyssey, Cousins felt the need to make a very different kind of film.

What is this film called Love? from Timo Langer (editor) on Vimeo.

“It’s an ad lib. It was made on three days off, as a response to the six years of making ‘The Story of Film’, for fun, to do something emotional and a bit sad. Its main subject is walking and being alone!” (Mark Cousins)

Since What is this film called Love? Mark has completed two more essay films, A Story of Children and Film (2013) & Here be Dragons (2013). To hear more about them click on the above links or below on our podcast.
